I am writing to let you know that this July, Network Rail will deliver a safety-critical upgrade to Onibury level crossing between Ludlow and Craven Arms on the A49.
Approximately 6,000 vehicles a day use this busy level crossing, connecting Leominster and Shrewsbury. This heavy usage, combined with the track layout and the interface between the road and railway mean its surface is prone to significant deterioration.
This has led to the emergency closure of the level crossing six times in recent months, to allow for interim repairs. We plan to renew the crossing and upgrade the track, preventing further disruptive road closures in the future and extending the lifespan of the crossing.
Between Saturday 1 July and Sunday 9 July the road will be fully closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. We are developing a diversionary route in conjunction with Highways England, Shropshire Council, Worcestershire Council and Herefordshire Council.
Over the two weekends (1-2 July and 8-9 July) we need unrestricted access to the level crossing so trains will not be running between Shrewsbury and Hereford. Our partners at Arriva Trains Wales will be operating a rail replacement bus service between the two stations.
We are holding drop-in events for the local community to come along and find out more about the work. I welcome you to attend, should you wish, at any time between 3pm and 7pm on the following dates:
I also attach a poster to advertise the drop-in events and FAQ document which I welcome you to share with local residents and businesses.
I apologise if this isn’t of relevance to you but should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleague, Nichole Sarra, as I will be on leave for the next two weeks.
